Roads are dangerous these days, with many motorists dying due to car crashes, with numerous pedestrians getting caught up in the carnage. We’ve seen such horror on our streets especially during the festive season, with South African roads and drivers being infamous for the high rate of accidents and deaths, despite attempts by the authorities to curb it every year.

So what exaclty can be done to stop drink driving and bad motoring skills from killing passengers every year then? It seems that the answer lies in taking of some of the control away from the person behind the wheel at the end of the day.

Vehicle to Vehicle technology is apparently seen as a way to combat this, with cars being able to electronically communicate with each other, thus allowing for vehicles to adjust their speed and proximity to each other accordingly.

In fact, the idea is for cars to constantly broadcast and transmit warnings of road hazards, to all vehicles behind them, thus ensuring less accidents in the same area.

But before you start worrying that a future with V2V vehicles will result in a environment where driving is taken completely out of your hands, don’t worry, as the idea is designed to be more of an aid that will assist drivers instead.

The Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in the USA is expected to make a ruling next year whether or not to move forward with further research on the developing technology.
